WITH SUPPORT FROM

Hello Littleton! Welcome back to our Tuesday morning newsletter, where we keep you informed about local news and happenings. If you like what you see, let us know and share this newsletter with your neighbors😊

I hope everyone is having a great week so far!

I’d like to start my newsletter off this week with a book recommendation from Paul Parish, a loyal Littleton Independent reader. After reading my profile on John Rosa last week, a local author who recently published a novel about the Italian mob in Denver, Paul reached out to recommend a book on the same theme.

For those of you interested in the history of the mob in our area, Paul recommends “Smaldone: The Untold Story of an American Crime Family” by former Denver Post writer Dick Kreck. Thanks, Paul, for the idea!

In this newsletter, I’ll tell you about some city employees who were recently recognized for their hard work. I’ll also fill you in on a change to your property taxes and a business merger that may impact you or your neighbors.

And for those of you who resolved to exercise more this year, I’ll share some details on a new, locally-owned group fitness gym that may be a perfect fit for you!

Read on, and as always, let me know what you think! What news and events should I be covering? Email me at njoss@coloradocommunitymedia.com to set up a time to grab coffee and let me know what stories you think I should cover.

First, here’s a look at what’s going on in Littleton and other notable news in our region:

  • Why South Suburban Parks and Rec District will decrease its tax rate this year, even though it could have increased it: Even with a lower rate, residents will pay $5.5 million more in taxes to the district than last year.

  • DISH Network, a major employer in Littleton, merges with former sister company EchoStar: Some analysts say the decision looks like a survival technique to prevent what appeared to be a looming bankruptcy.

Littleton tips its hat to a trio of ‘outstanding’ city employees

The City of Littleton recognized three of its employees, citing their hard work, creative problem solving and dedication to their jobs.

Michelle Graboski of the Bemis Public Library, Sarah White in the Public Works Department and Dylan Malewska of the Littleton Museum were all lauded at a crowded city event.

They recently received “Outstanding Employee of the Year” awards and $1,000 each for their efforts in 2023.

The award honors all-star employees who are well-known for their performance and service, said Kelli Narde, the city’s director of communications. These employees are dependable, accountable, communicative, respectful and professional.

Graboski, a business support assistant at the library, has been working in her position for just over a year. In that time, she impressed her colleagues with her fast learning, ambitious ideas and responsiveness.

“She has streamlined processes, organized events and volunteers, improved communications and made everyone feel heard and cared for,” her nominators wrote. “She’s like our mom in the best way — she keeps us all on track and makes sure we’ve got what we need, even if that’s just a listening ear.”

White started her role as a water resources manager in the Public Works Department in early 2023.

Early in her role, she coordinated relief and mitigation efforts for flash flooding and the rare Category 1 tornado that touched down south of the city limits last year. Shortly thereafter, she managed emergency response and repairs for several culvert collapses and sinkholes.

“Sarah’s efforts are still ongoing, as lasting effects from the storms are still being addressed,” her nominator wrote. “Sarah continues to meet and surpass the expectations of her position and community, and we all can look to her as a model employee of our organization.”

Like White, Malewska, overcame serious challenges in his job in 2023.

The aging Littleton Museum buildings had multiple heating/air conditioning system failures, 43 roof leaks, storm damage and needed other repairs. As the lead facility maintenance technician at the museum when he was nominated, it was Malewska’s role to repair many of these issues.

“Dylan has done an amazing job prioritizing our emergency and high-priority projects this year,” Museum Director Becky Kosma, Malewska’s supervisor, wrote for the nomination. “Thanks to Dylan, the museum has strengthened relationships with many other departments and has us set up for success in the coming years. He has had a very trying year but rose to the challenge like a champion and I am proud to have him on my team!”

Reporter’s Diary

I enjoyed interviewing Cole Crawford, who recently opened a gym in Littleton. Carbon Strength and Conditioning aims to make working out accessible, fun and community-oriented.

Crawford’s passion really came through in our conversation, and I enjoyed learning about his path to a career that he really loves. After working in tech for seven years, he took a risk to follow his heart and help make his community healthier.

“I was just asking myself a lot of reflective questions, like, ‘Is this exactly what I want to be doing forever? Is it time to potentially look at making a change?’” he said about leaving his previous job.

Read the full story here to learn about Crawford’s coaching style and what makes his gym unique.

What’s nourishing Nina?

Ethiopian food features a wide variety of spicy stews and stir-fries and a crepe-like flatbread called injera. / Stock photo

For my sister’s birthday last week, my family went to an Ethiopian restaurant in my hometown in Michigan. We shared a smattering of traditional dishes, bursting with spices, flavor and lots of lentils. I have had Ethiopian food a few times in my life, but I was reminded of how delicious it is! It’s a great option for vegetarians, too, since many of the dishes use other sources of protein.

In my search for restaurants in Littleton, I struggled to find any that focus on Ethiopian cuisine. Do you know of any nearby? If so, please let me know!

If you don’t mind driving to a neighboring area, there are some great options near Denver. Mesob Ethiopian Restaurant has positive reviews, and I’ve heard good things about The Ethiopian Restaurant on Colfax Avenue. Mama Africa Cafe, closer to Glendale, also has raving reviews and serves Eritrean food in addition to Ethiopian.

If you end up trying one of these places, let me know how it is!
