Hello, all! It’s Nina Joss, back with your Littleton Independent newsletter.
In today’s newsletter, I’ll tell you about a new restaurant in Aspen Grove. I’ll also give you an update on the “Safer Streets Littleton” initiative, specifically as it relates to some changes near schools. I’ll fill you in on a recent community event about sustainability, too.
Stay tuned after that for a book recommendation and to give me yours, as well as several great events at the library!
As always, thanks for reading. What else is on your mind about Littleton? Email me at njoss@coloradocommunitymedia.com and let me know what stories you think I should cover.

Calling all chicken salad lovers: You have new haven in Aspen Grove
|

Chicken Salad Chick of Littleton raised over $3,000 in funds to support the Backpack Society, a nonprofit organization that works to end food insecurity for students in the Douglas County School District and Littleton Public Schools. Maureen McFerson, Backpack Society leaders and Chicken Salad Chick team members hold a giant check at the restaurant's grand opening on Sept. 10.

Earlier this month, a local customer drove to a restaurant in Aspen Grove before the sun even came up. The customer arrived at 3:15 a.m. and was the first person in line when the business’ doors opened that day. These efforts won this lucky customer free chicken salad for a year.
It was the grand opening of a Chicken Salad Chick of Littleton, a new location of the national restaurant in Aspen Grove. The restaurant is dedicated to made-from-scratch, southern-style chicken salad and aims to serve customers with gracious hospitality, according to its website.
“We put our heart into everything we do to create a lasting memory for our guests,” said the Aspen Grove location’s owner, Maureen McFerson. “You leave feeling taken care of, and better than when you came. That’s why many people use the word love when they describe this brand.”
Read the full story here to learn about the new franchise and McFerson’s hopes for the new restaurant.

A few weeks ago, I met with several members of the South Metro Community Foundation and the Littleton Business Chamber to learn about their views on what matters to the community. We covered so many topics: mental health, food insecurity, new businesses, public safety, homelessness, foster care, street safety and more.
I am always looking to connect with community members to learn more about what matters to you and how I can help bring you information on those topics. Have an idea? Email me at njoss@coloradocommunitymedia.com to schedule a time to get coffee and chat!

The cover of “Americanah” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
I am loving the fall weather lately! It’s my favorite season, and such a great time of year to enjoy the beautiful changing leaves or cozy up with a good book.
Lately, I’m reading “Americanah” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. So far, the story is largely about the experience of a young Nigerian woman who comes to the U.S., searching for opportunity and education. The book is opening my eyes to so many things about Nigeria and the main character’s experience as a newcomer to the U.S. I am learning so much!
What are you reading lately? Send me your recs at njoss@coloradocommunitymedia.com, and they may be featured in an upcoming newsletter!
